The existence of Purwodadi Botanic Garden plants collection from Sempu Island Nature Reserve, East Java

Biodiversity in Sempu Island is fairly diversified. Sempu is a small island, which acts as a natural reservoir of several ecosystems such as mangrove forest, coastal forest, lowland forest, and grassland. It is also a unique diversity of endemic plants. Therefore, as an institution of ex-situ plants conservation especially in a dry lowland area, Purwodadi botanical garden needs to do conservation activities namely inventory, exploration, and collection of plants. The purpose of conservation activities is to save the plant from extinction as well as document the plant diversity in a particular area. Before conducting exploration activities in this region, investigation on existing collections in this area resulted from exploration, which has not ever conducted, was carried out. This study aimed to determine the number of plant species resulted from exploration in Sempu Island Nature Reserve and the presence of plants in the Purwodadi botanical garden collection. According to the literature review, it can be reported that three different years, 1979, 1994 and 1997, exploration activities in Sempu Island were conducted. 97 species were collected from those three explorations. Only two species of existed plant collection originated from Sempu Island Nature Reserve have been listed in the catalog. However, there are about 29 species in the garden collection
