Mount Merapi National Park (MMNP) is a natural ecosystem area which has very important role in keeping species biodiversity of plant and animal around Mount Merapi. Merapi eruption in 2010 has emerged a billion cubic of the high economical value of sand separated at national park area. Hence, the area where covered by sand has been stimulated a clash of many parties and made the park area threatened. One of the centers of the conflict at MMNP area is placed at Jurang Jero, Srumbung in Magelang District, Central Java. Sand exploration at Jurang Jero is a good option to increase the stakeholder income, but on the other hand, the mining activities and removing the results from a national park area will require a strict legal permit procedure that is not easy to achieve. MMNP agency is one of the parties that very interest to this contradiction and curious in how the conflict among stakeholders can be easily managed. This paper is aimed to present the conflict resolution strategies in the utilization of the sand mined from MMNP area. Problems identification and conflict mapping analysis have been designed to formulate the best solution for Jurang Jero case. The crucial factors causing the conflict are miss understanding, lack of communication, different on the objective of sand utilization and the competition on using limited sand stock. The parties who have a conflict interests with MMNP in terms of sand mining are identified as follow: conventional sand miner, mechanic sand miner, the river basin council of Serayu Opak (BBWSO) and non-miner local people. MMNP needs various strategies to conquer the conflict, “collaboration†strategy is designed to face the manual sand miner, “competition†strategy is formulated to face the mechanic sand miner, improving communication is proposed to face the conflict between MMNP versus BBWSO, and smoothing strategy is proposed to face the conflict between mechanic sand miner and manual sand miner.
