Abstract

Fatem S, Asem G. 2015. Conservation district as political action of local government in order to support biodiversity conservation: Case study of Tambrauw District of Papua Barat. Pros Sem Nas Masy Biodiv Indon 1: 1403-1410. Tambrauw is a new autonomous district since 2008 and about 11.373,96 km2 is a total of administration area. Geographically, Tambrauw is located on northern part of Papua’s Bird Head. This region is district which covered nearly 80% of the conservation area and protection forest. Beside forest ecosystem, the coastal of Tambrauw is essential as a nesting habitat of leatherback species (Dermochelys coriacea) of Papua and Western Pacific. Currently, it is proposed to be Abun Marine Conservation Area (KKLD Abun). Forest resources of Tambrauw, as well as cultural diversity, are very high. However, it can be challenging for the development process. The government of Tambrauw is an effort to find good natural resources management for local people. The political commitment of Tambrauw government is figured out by the mission of keeping environment by the declaration of Tambrauw as conservation district and protection of local right for local people in Tambrauw. During 2012 to 2015, some activities were done as preparedness for implementing this commitment. This initiative was as an effort to stimulate conservation program and economic activity. Strategically, these commitments were showed by Tambrauw city planning revision, development of the partnership, budgeting, and others. This paper was preliminary analysis on the aspect of local government policy in order to implement conservation districts policy on urban planning aspect and regional development.
