Abstract

Sandalwood (Santalum album Linn) is one of flagship species because of the content of santalol as a prestigious high-value aromatic material for different use. Sandalwood oil demand in the world had a deficit of 80 tons /year of the total requirement of 200 tons /year, thus opening opportunities for communities in its development. The research aims to determine the community participation to develop sandalwood on private land. Research conducted at the Central Sumba. Observation and interview methods used to 21 household units, descriptive analysis of qualitative data. The results showed the public participation in sandalwood development on private land such as yard, garden and agroforest are varied. Local government intervention is needed to strengthen the sandalwood development on a wide scale. It is concluded that community participation is the important pillars for the preservation and development of sandalwood in the future.
