Abstract

Mujiono N. 2016. Snail of the genus Clithon (Gastropoda: Neritidae) in Java: Status, distribution and phylogeny. Pros Sem Nas Masy Biodiv Indon 2: 149-154. Neritid snail is diverse both in their species and living habitat. Compare to their marine sisters, the freshwater snail species are less diverse. They face a rapid change of habitat which threatens their lives. Java, a densely populated island, now is facing the destruction of their stream and river which serve as living habitat for this snail. The information of their diversity and distribution is still scarce. Study on the gastropod of genus Clithon from Java was carried out recently. This study was focusing on three main topics: the status, distribution and their relationship. Eleven species were identified from the specimens collection in Museum Zoology Bogor (MZB) and this number matched with mentioned in the references. All eleven species were tabulated according to their distribution into six provinces in Java. Ten from eleven species were found in Banten. Clithon bicolor, C. corona and C. oualaniensis were the most widely distributed species since they were found in four provinces. Clithon coronatus was the oldest and rarest collection since it was collected from West Java in 1924 and only three specimens were available from single catalogue number. Type locality of Clithon flavovirens and C. fuliginosus were known from Java. Phenetic analysis based on shell’s morphology was applied to find out their relationship. From this results, all species of snail could be classified into two major groups. The first group was non spinous shell with the minute serrations on collumela, while the second group was the spinous shell without serrations on collumela.
